Sunny African island offers £1.33 beer and 26C April temperatures

Africa is full of beautiful beaches and hot weather, making it a great choice for UK travellers looking for sunshine.

Cape Verde’s largest island is one of those destinations worth visiting. As the first island in the group to be settled, it is packed with culture and has a long and interesting history.

Even with so much to offer, it welcomed only nine percent of the one million visitors who travelled to Cape Verde in 2023.

This means that people who do visit can enjoy a calmer and more relaxed holiday without large crowds.

There are plenty of reasons why Santiago should be on the wish list for British holidaymakers.

The island enjoys warm weather all year, so sun lovers can visit at any time. In April, temperatures reach around 26C, and there are lots of beaches where visitors can make the most of the sunshine.

Around the island, travellers will find many different types of beaches. These include white sandy beaches, small rocky coves and famous black sand beaches, created by the island’s volcanic past.

Ribeira da Prata is one of Santiago’s most unusual beaches and comes highly recommended.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor that they visited the black beach on their first day. They said the water was calm, the beach was easy to reach and a river runs into the sea there, adding that it is well worth seeing.

If the sunshine and beaches are not enough to tempt you, the low prices might be. In the island’s capital city, Praia, a pint of beer costs just £1.33.

Santiago is also known for its lively evenings, with many bars offering live music at night. There are lots of restaurants to choose from too, and a meal at a budget friendly place costs around £4.

For visitors who prefer adventure, hiking is a great way to explore the island.

Walking trails lead through mountains, past waterfalls and across changing landscapes, giving travellers the chance to see just how varied and beautiful Santiago really is.
