Who is behind it
My name is Ryan, and I'm based in the UK, and I've been mapping places like this since 2018. I started UK Hidden Gems after getting fed up visiting places heaving with tourists, and built a mobile app showing hidden gems across Britain.
Our Hidden Earth is that idea taken worldwide. I've personally visited 28 countries on the Our Hidden Earth map, and plan to visit all of them as the years go on.
How every place gets on the map
This is the part that matters, because it is the difference between a curated map and a scraped list.
1. Discovery. Places come from three sources: my own travel and research, reader suggestions, and systematic searching of local-language sources, regional tourism records and geographic databases - the places an English-language search would never surface.
2. Verification. Every single pin is cross-checked against mapping data and must resolve to real, verifiable coordinates. Anything that cannot be resolved is removed. This is a hard gate applied to every entry without exception, and it is why the map has 60,000 places rather than the larger number I started with.
3. Categorisation and review. Each verified place is categorised, positioned on the map, and checked for duplicates and mislabelled entries.
What this proves, and what it doesn't. It proves the place exists where I say it does. It does not prove it is open today, that access is unrestricted, or that it's worth your afternoon. Those are judgements, and where I make them I say so.
How the guides are written
The map and the guides are built differently. Every place on the map is verified before it appears there. The guides are the free writing that points you toward them.
The guides are researched and drafted with AI assistance, then checked and reviewed before publication. I say so plainly because you're entitled to know, and because a site that hides it is telling you something about itself.
The rules the writing follows:
Real places only. Every place named must be real and correctly named, including the name itself, with no invented "East", "Upper" or "Ruins" bolted on. This is the most serious error I can make and the one I work hardest to prevent.
No named businesses. I don't name individual restaurants, cafés, bars or hotels. Businesses close and change hands, and sending you to a shut door is worse than telling you nothing.
No unverifiable specifics. No ticket prices, opening hours or precise transport times unless I can stand behind them. A season or a range beats an invented number.
An honest drawback in every guide. Every place has someone it isn't for.
What I don't claim.
I haven't stood in 62,000+ places. Nobody publishing at this scale has, and any site implying otherwise isn't being straight with you. What I can promise is that every location was verified as real before it reached you.
When I get it wrong
I will, and I'd rather hear it from you than not. If you find an error - a place that doesn't exist, a wrong location, an out-of-date detail, please email info@ourhiddenearth.com. I aim to respond within 3 working days. Confirmed errors are corrected, substantive corrections are noted at the foot of the page with the date, and anything that turns out not to exist as described is removed from the guide and the map.
What I won't do
I don't take money to feature a place. No paid listings, no sponsored gems, ever.
Photographs
Images are used under Creative Commons licences from Wikimedia Commons, Geograph and similar sources, credited and linked to the licence on every photo. If you're a rights holder and think an image is used incorrectly, email me and I'll correct or remove it promptly.
