Beautiful hidden European seaside town with no queues and €3 beers

As summer comes to an end, lots of Brits look for one last break to enjoy a bit more sunshine, especially as some holiday spots stay warm well into autumn.

The good news is that flight prices are now at their lowest as busy tourist areas start winding down for the year.

But with new rules coming into place for Europe’s entry and exit systems, some travellers may face long queues at passport control as digital checks are introduced.

Travel experts at eurochange have pointed out one of the best “non-Schengen” places that avoids all of this: Kotor in Montenegro.

Many people have never even heard of the Bay of Kotor, yet it’s one of Europe’s hidden gems. Even better, eurochange says return flights are as cheap as £34 in October from London Stansted to Podgorica.

Places to stay start from £23 a night, a 3-course meal is around £39.74, and a beer costs just £2.38.

Sitting on the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro, the area is surrounded by dramatic mountains. The nearby town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with medieval streets and a beautiful old cathedral.

Even though UK searches for “Kotor Montenegro” have jumped by 100% in the last month, it’s still fairly under the radar, which makes it great for anyone wanting to avoid big crowds.

The team at eurochange said: “Montenegro is quickly becoming one of the most popular up-and-coming destinations in Europe.

It’s a quieter alternative to Croatia, with similar coastal towns, pretty beaches and amazing scenery, but it’s roughly 20–30% cheaper.”

“Kotor, a coastal town in Montenegro, is well worth a visit. This town offers outstanding natural beauty, looking out onto beautiful, bright blue waters, and is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in all of Europe.

This is a great spot if you’re after a chilled, slow-paced holiday, without having to pay extortionate prices.”

If you love trying new food, Montenegro has plenty to offer. Its dishes come from both its mountains and its coastline, so expect lots of fresh meat and fish.

The country’s national dish is Cevapi, which is a plate of small minced-meat sausages usually served with bread and chopped onions.
