European capital that looks like Greece, with £2 beers and flights from only £26

The bright and lively capital of Albania has recently been ranked one of the cheapest European cities for Brits to visit this year.

And with flights starting at just £26 in October, according to Skyscanner, it’s easy to see why.

Experts at eurochange say the city is full of character and colour. They explained: “One of the nicest ways to explore is simply by walking around and following the bold street art, murals and quirky graffiti.”

“The city is also brilliant for anyone who loves food, with prices that are surprisingly low.

Make sure you try local favourites like Fërgesë Gjize, a baked cheese and pepper dish, and Trilece, a soft sponge dessert soaked in three types of milk.” Time Out Europe listed Tirana as one of the best-value cities when it comes to eating out and things to do.

Entry to top museums usually ranges from £2.50 to £5, while a beer costs around £2.95. A one-bedroom Airbnb averages about £40 per night, and a meal for two often comes in between £21 and £25, usually with big portions.

Travellers can explore several museums around the city, with Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2 being among the most popular.

These unusual museums are set inside old wartime bunkers and give visitors a look at what life was like in Albania during Enver Hoxha’s strict rule.

Tirana is also known for its lively evenings, especially in the Blokku neighbourhood, which is packed with bars and clubs.

Cocktails usually cost no more than £6 or £7, and the city enjoys scenery similar to Greece. Albania sits just across the water from Corfu, so the sea views feel almost identical.

When it’s time to eat, Tirana has plenty of great options. Keep an eye out for lamb or aubergine dishes, or pick up a warm burek pastry from a bakery.

The city is surrounded by rocky hills, and the best place to admire the landscape is from the top of Dajti Mountain, reached by a scenic cable car ride. Once there, visitors can enjoy sweeping views and try out a range of family-friendly activities.

With low-cost airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair flying to the city, the journey from London to Tirana takes just over three hours. There is also a wide choice of places to stay, including hotels, holiday rentals, and hostels for every budget.
