One of Europe’s most famous cities is about to make a big change to its tourist tax this winter.
From December 1, this city will increase its visitor levy from 3.2 percent to 8.5 percent on overnight stays, meaning travellers could end up paying more than twice as much in extra charges per night.
Known for its grand history, elegant buildings and impressive palaces, the city is also loved for its Christmas markets, with more than 15 festive spots to enjoy.
The sharp rise in fees comes just as the Austrian capital prepares to welcome thousands of holidaymakers.

The Christmas market outside the city hall (Rathaus) has over 150 stalls and attracts around three million visitors every year.
A standard hotel stay costing about £129 a night will now see its tourist tax jump from £4.13 to roughly £10.97.
This is almost a £7 increase per night, which can become expensive for longer stays or family trips, especially during the festive period when prices are already high for many people.

The rise is being described as part of a bigger financial plan to help balance the city’s budget, with the extra money going towards upgrades in infrastructure, education and eco-friendly transport.
The city believes the higher tax will bring in an extra £70 million each year, helping to reduce a predicted £533 million budget gap in 2025.
Vienna plans to use the additional funds to update its public transport network, improve green travel options, support schools and public services, and invest in new infrastructure that will benefit both residents and visitors.
