Spain continues to be one of the most visited countries in Europe, drawing in millions of tourists from across the globe every year.

Travellers are drawn to Spain for its mix of sandy beaches, stunning landscapes and exciting historic cities.

Popular favourites still include Barcelona and Madrid, as well as the well-known resorts along the Costa del Sol.

The Canary Islands and Balearic Islands are also huge hits, offering long beaches and plenty of nightlife.

One city that is sometimes missed but has a lot to offer, and is perfect for a short break, is Cádiz in Andalusia.

This ancient port was founded around 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians and is the oldest city in Western Europe. It later became the base of the Spanish Navy and grew rapidly in the 16th century through trade and exploration.

Cádiz has more than 100 watchtowers, including the famous Torre Tavira, which was once used to look out for arriving ships.

Along the seafront you’ll find the grand, 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral, known for its baroque and neoclassical design.

The city is effectively split into two parts – one side features wide streets, beaches, sailing clubs and modern sports centres.

The other side is home to the historic heart of Cádiz, filled with charming old neighbourhoods such as the medieval district of El Pópulo, the fishing quarter of La Viña and Santa María, known as a living centre for flamenco.
