There is a small Irish city packed with brilliant pubs and a rich past, and many visitors end up liking it more than Dublin.
Ireland does not have many cities, and most people from the UK only know the capital.
Belfast is another well-known choice that draws lots of tourists, but there are several other cities across the island that many travellers have yet to explore.

Given how close Ireland is to the UK, it is surprising how many towns and cities with great attractions are still unknown to British tourists.
One of these places is Waterford. Known as the oldest city in the country after being settled by Vikings, Waterford is filled with interesting historical sights.
On top of that, it has a growing food scene and, like most Irish cities, no shortage of welcoming pubs.
Waterford sits on Ireland’s southern coast in the province of Munster. With a population of just over 60,000 people, it is one of the smallest cities in the country.
This smaller size is likely why it often gets missed by tourists visiting Ireland for the first time.

For British travellers searching for a fresh city break idea, Waterford could be a great choice.
The easiest way to reach the city is by taking a ferry from the UK to Wexford or flying into Cork City. From there, you can travel on by bus or car to reach Waterford City.
There is plenty to see and do in the city to keep visitors busy for a full weekend.
According to Tripadvisor, the top attraction in Waterford is the Waterford Greenway. This long walking and cycling route runs from the city to towns like Dungarvan and offers stunning coastal views along with wide green countryside scenery.
Another popular spot is the Viking Triangle, a historic part of the city filled with museums and old buildings.
Here, visitors can learn all about Waterford’s Viking roots and discover how the city has grown and changed over time.
