World’s worst city break slammed by Brits as ‘too expensive’ and ‘overcrowded’

A new travel survey has named the least popular city break outside Europe, with visitors calling it “overrated” and a “complete rip-off”.

The seaside destination finished bottom of the Which? world city survey, which asked more than 1,500 travellers about their trips to cities outside Europe over the past year.

Based on reviews from nearly 2,500 city visits, a warm city in Florida scored the lowest overall with just 56 percent.

The rating was worked out using how happy people were with their stay and whether they would suggest it to others.

After questions covering food and drink, culture, attractions, transport and value for money, Miami ended up last out of 35 cities.

The city was labelled “overrated” and received only one star for cultural sights and value for money.

One British visitor described it as a “total rip off” and said it was very expensive when compared to the UK.

Price comparison website Numbeo shows that a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant costs around £84. A simple cappuccino can also set visitors back about £4.

Which? also found that the average flight price was £569 at the time of the survey, using data from Skyscanner. The cost of a three or four star hotel averaged £167 per night, based on prices from Kayak.

Miami did manage to score a little better in some areas, including food and drink, hotels, transport and lower crowd levels, earning two stars in each. Its strongest point was shopping, which was given three out of five stars.

Despite the poor ranking, one local resident Layah Heilpern described the city as a “paradise” in a post shared on X. She said living there made her feel like she was always on holiday.

She added that whenever she travels away, she just wants to return as soon as possible.

According to her, the weather, beaches, palm trees and food elsewhere never compare, and she always looks forward to getting back home.
