As summer fades across Europe, there’s no need to worry, as plenty of stunning places are still waiting to be explored, many of which are at their very best during autumn and winter.
In fact, the cooler months often make the perfect setting for a European city break, with crisp weather that’s ideal for strolling along pretty cobbled streets, enjoying quieter sights, and even visiting a Christmas market or two once winter rolls in.
One city that deserves a place on your travel list is this place in Poland, recently named the home of Europe’s most charming Old Town.

Highlights include the impressive St Mary’s Basilica and the castle on Wawel Hill, both guaranteed to thrill anyone who loves history.
Right in the centre of the Old Town sits the busy Central Square, filled with cafés, restaurants, bars, museums and hotels, all within walking distance of the city’s most famous spots.
Thanks to its lively atmosphere, it’s also a favourite choice for stag and hen weekends.
The beautiful buildings and eye-catching architecture around the Old Town make it perfect for photos (which explains why it’s so popular with Instagram fans).
Most of the area is traffic-free, so you can wander around slowly and take it all in.

Although some might say it’s too early to think about Christmas, there’s no denying the extra magic Krakow shows during the festive period.
The city regularly ranks among Europe’s best Christmas markets and was named the continent’s ‘most festive’ spot last year thanks to its huge range of stalls selling decorations, gifts, mulled wine and plenty of tasty treats.
Add in the strong chance of snow in December, and it’s easy to understand why Krakow is often called a real-life winter wonderland.
It also remains one of the more affordable European cities, with lots of budget-friendly flights and places to stay available throughout the season.
