Charming Mediterranean spot on the Adriatic Sea described as ‘magnificent’

Europe is full of stunning beaches and pretty squares that look like scenes from a movie. With so many places to discover, even seasoned travellers may have overlooked this special spot in the Balkans.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Kotor is one of Europe’s most underrated Mediterranean destinations.

Since this place became independent in 2006, its medieval towns and dramatic coastline along the Adriatic Sea have helped it grow quickly in popularity with tourists.

Packed with narrow streets and several Romanesque churches, Kotor has been named one of the Mediterranean’s most underrated places by travel experts at Samboat.

They praised it for its strong small town feel and relaxed charm.

Often described as one of the best kept medieval towns on the Adriatic, Kotor is also home to the beautiful Bay of Kotor.

From here, visitors can discover nearby attractions such as natural caves and ancient ruins dotted around the coastline.

With the Dinaric Alps rising behind it, Kotor is also known as a magnificent place for boating. Many trips leave from the bay, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery from the water instead of the land.

The busiest months in Kotor are July and August, when cruise ships arrive at the Port of Kotor almost every day while travelling along the Adriatic coast.

Outside of this, there are still plenty of daily boat tours that stop at old monasteries and quiet spots where you can swim in bright blue water.

Travelling by boat also gives you the chance to visit the peaceful town of Perast, which has no cars and is known for its seafood restaurants.

Nearby is another famous sight, Our Lady of the Rocks, a man made island with a church dating back to the 17th century.

When you are not out on the water, there are plenty of sandy and pebble beaches to relax on.

Many of them have clear water that is perfect for swimming on a warm day.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Kotor, as the weather is still sunny and mild.

These seasons are much quieter than summer, meaning you can explore the town without the large crowds that arrive during peak season.
