Breathtaking North African country poised to surpass Egypt as next top tourist hotspot

Updated: Mar 6

Morocco is on track to become Africa’s most popular tourist destination, welcoming nearly 16 million visitors by November 2024.

This marks a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Officials are hopeful that the country will reach 17.5 million visitors in 2025, further securing its spot as a top global travel destination.

Marrakech, also known as the "Red City," remains the heart of Morocco’s tourism, attracting millions of visitors every year.

Its rich culture, historic landmarks, and easy access via budget airlines make it a favourite for both international tourists and Moroccans living abroad.

Morocco’s tourism boom is thanks to efforts to showcase its variety of attractions, from the lively souks of Marrakech to the peaceful beaches of Agadir and the modern charm of Tangier and Casablanca.

World events have also influenced travel trends, with visitors like a French tourist in Marrakech choosing Morocco over places like Lebanon due to security concerns in the Middle East.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Morocco’s economy, making up 7% of the country’s GDP.

In 2024 alone, the sector brought in €9.2 billion, and experts predict record-breaking earnings by the end of the year.

French travellers remain the largest group of foreign visitors, helped by 34 direct flights between France and Marrakech.

British tourism is also on the rise, with 47% more UK visitors in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Looking ahead, Morocco’s tourism industry is set to expand even further.

The country is gearing up to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025, expecting around 500,000 visitors, and with its confirmed bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, even more global attention is on the way.
