Famous for its delicious chocolate, breathtaking lakes, and world-class ski resorts, Switzerland is on the lookout for new residents.
Back in 2017, the small hilltop village of Albinen in Switzerland wanted to stop its population from shrinking. To attract new people, it offered a generous £17,746 (20,000 CHF) to anyone under 45 who moved there.
The deal became even more tempting with an extra £8,873.20 (10,000 CHF) for every child brought along.

One of the conditions, however, was that new residents had to buy a home worth at least £177,460 (200,000 CHF) and agree to stay in the village for at least 10 years.
Another requirement was to become a Swiss citizen, which was a huge draw for many. Mr. Wayne Mills, Head of Operations at international shipping company Seven Seas Worldwide, explained the appeal.
“Albinen is right in the heart of the stunning Swiss Alps, offering a peaceful lifestyle in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.”
Word spread quickly, and within just a few years, the tiny 4,300ft-high village was overwhelmed with applications.

To make sure new residents are truly committed, the cash incentive is now only available after living in Albinen for five years. Despite its small size, the rest of Switzerland has plenty to offer.
Switzerland is home to over 1,500 lakes, with Lake Geneva being one of the most famous and breathtaking.
For nature lovers, there’s more to explore than just lakes. The country is home to the Matterhorn, Europe’s most iconic mountain, as well as countless ski resorts to keep visitors active all year round.
Switzerland is also famous for creating the iconic Toblerone chocolate and is well known for its love of cheese and wine.
