Why this tiny, untouched Spanish fishing village smells like a secret

Nestled perfectly into a series of small, rocky coves along a particularly stunning stretch of the Costa Brava, lies an immaculate, hidden fishing village that feels completely cut off from the usual Spanish holiday mayhem.

Unlike the enormous resorts nearby, Calella has fiercely resisted mass development, retaining its historic charm and relaxed, low-key atmosphere.

This gem offers an idyllic holiday for keen walkers who appreciate a genuine, unhurried coastal experience.

The village’s delightful secret is its collection of small, sheltered beaches, each separated by rocky points and connected by a wonderfully scenic coastal path.

This unique, broken geography means the area is never overwhelmed and always offers a quiet corner where you can truly appreciate the pristine water and traditional fishermen's arches.

The most famous cove, Port Bo, is still used by fishermen and provides an unspoiled, picturesque anchor for the whole settlement.

For practical travellers, be warned that the small size of the village means traffic and car park facilities are extremely limited, especially during the busy August holiday period.

The roads leading into the town are narrow, and you will likely need to use dedicated parking areas outside the main centre and walk down to the coves, so bring your comfortable boots.

Remember to pack a towel in your boot, as the quiet coves offer some of the best swimming on the whole coast.
