Tourists urged to ditch Amalfi Coast and Rome for a better hidden Italian destination

As the months roll on, many European destinations start to warm up and enjoy plenty of sunshine.

This often tempts people to escape everyday life at home and head overseas. While holidays can cost a lot, there are still some great bargains to be found at this time of year.

Staying away from the most famous tourist spots can also help keep prices down. It can lead you to quieter places that many travellers miss, giving you a more relaxed break away from the crowds.

Hayley Hunter, who regularly shares her travel tips and favourite places online, is a big fan of Italy. She believes she has discovered a truly beautiful location that beats many of the usual tourist favourites.

Hayley said the Amalfi Coast is lovely, but asked if people had heard of Tropea. Stories say this clifftop town in Calabria was founded by Hercules.

Tropea is known for its historic old town, amazing beaches, boat trips and delicious local food.

She also said the place left her speechless, adding that it is around a six-hour train journey from Rome. Hayley explained that Tropea is cheaper and much quieter than the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre.

The town sits high above soft white sand and clear blue water. Visitors can relax on the beach, swim in the sea or try water sports.

The clear water is full of colourful fish, making snorkelling a great thing to do while visiting.

Walking is the best way to see Tropea, as its narrow streets are full of charm and hidden surprises. The old town includes a cathedral from the 12th century along with many other historic buildings.

Calabria is famous for growing red onions, especially around Tropea, so they are easy to spot in local shops. Visitors will also notice strings of red chillies on display, another food the region is well known for.
