The secret riviera port whose deep waters hide centuries of gold

Tucked discreetly into a spectacularly deep, natural bay just moments from the frenzy of Nice, lies a stunning coastal town that many tourists simply drive straight past.

The harbour waters here are the deepest on the entire French Riviera, creating a profound, sheltered atmosphere where huge luxury liners anchor far from the busy shore.

The town’s old quarter, a tangle of ancient, untouched streets, is utterly silent and feels completely separate from the modern world.

The beautiful, hidden gem we are talking about is Villefranche-sur-Mer, a historically fortified port in the glamorous Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.

Its vibrant, colourful seafront buildings curve perfectly around the bay, creating a genuinely picturesque scene that remains largely authentic despite its high-profile neighbours.

This tranquil spot makes for a perfect, relaxing holiday for keen walkers who appreciate history and breathtaking coastal views.

The great secret of Villefranche lies deep beneath the colourful harbour in its legendary Rue Obscure, the "Dark Street", a massive, covered thoroughfare built in 1260 to serve as a massive covered passageway and medieval barracks.

Furthermore, the town’s incredibly deep bay has made it a crucial military and naval base for centuries, meaning its history is one of secrecy and strategic importance, unlike the openly flashy towns nearby. It is a genuine piece of history hiding in plain sight.

For travellers planning a visit, be prepared for a village built vertically onto the steep hillside, meaning comfortable boots are a necessity for exploring the upper streets.

Finding a convenient car park is notoriously difficult in the narrow streets, especially during peak holiday season, so be prepared to park further away and walk down towards the waterfront.

Check your boot for a swimming costume, as the quiet, curved beach is one of the best on this stretch of coast.
