This eagles’ nest might be the most romantic and untouched village on the Riviera

Clinging impossibly to a sheer rock face, over 400 metres above the sparkling Mediterranean, lies a spectacular medieval settlement that truly earns its ancient nickname: the "Eagle's Nest."

The approach, via the winding, scenic Moyenne Corniche road, instantly isolates the village, giving the whole place a thrilling, elevated atmosphere of remoteness.

Its stone walls and towering ruins feel utterly eerie, whispering tales of Saracen invasions and forgotten castles.

The heavenly destination we’ve uncovered for your next summer holiday is Èze, a dramatically positioned village perché in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.

Situated perfectly between the glitz of Nice and the glamour of Monaco, this hidden gem remains a quiet, historic sanctuary, fiercely guarding its medieval charm.

This beautiful location is ideal for keen walkers who appreciate a breathtaking view after a strenuous climb.

Èze’s fascinating, romantic secret lies high atop the village in the exquisite Exotic Garden, built upon the dramatic ruins of a 12th-century fortress destroyed by Louis XIV.

From this elevated vantage point, surrounded by bizarre cacti and succulents, you can feast your eyes on one of the most sublime and untouched panoramic views of the entire French Riviera.

The philosopher Nietzsche himself famously hiked the incredibly steep path connecting the village to the sea below.

Travellers planning a visit must be aware of the challenging, vertical terrain; the village consists almost entirely of steep, cobbled, narrow staircases designed for donkeys, not cars.

Although the town is famous, the subterranean car park near the entrance (Parking Général De Gaulle) can fill up rapidly in high season, so an early morning arrival is essential.

Leave heavy luggage behind and just pack your essentials and sturdy boots in the boot!
