Pretty little town ranked as the second most beautiful destination in Europe

Many travellers heading to mainland Europe often choose well known countries like Italy, France and Germany.

However, Bosnia and Herzegovina is another place full of beauty, with green hills topped by houses, peaceful lakes and an impressive 22 metre waterfall.

One of its most eye catching towns is Jajce, which is becoming better known for its striking scenery and deep history.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is famous for its many glacial lakes and natural springs. Some are used for bottled mineral water, while others feed popular spa resorts.

It is an ideal country for anyone who loves nature, and Jajce shows this better than most places.

The town offers more than just lovely views, as history and nature sit side by side, letting visitors wander past lakes, hills and medieval buildings all in one place.

Although many tourists have yet to discover Bosnia and Herzegovina, large numbers visited last year to enjoy its landscapes. In 2024, the country welcomed close to two million visitors, which was a 10.3 percent rise on the year before.

Overnight stays passed four million, increasing by 8.5 percent. Travel experts at Time Out have since named Jajce as one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

Visitors can easily walk up nearby hills to enjoy wonderful views over the town and the surrounding countryside.

Much of Jajce’s appeal comes from its relaxed feel, where old history blends naturally with modern life.

Jajce is made even more special by nearby natural sights such as the stunning Pliva Lakes and the famous waterfall that drops 22 metres right in the centre of town.

The waterfall creates a calm and scenic setting, making it perfect for travellers who want both adventure and quiet moments.

The best time to visit Jajce is in summer, especially in June, when daytime temperatures reach around 26C and drop to about 8C at night.

Ryanair and Wizz Air both run direct flights from the UK to Sarajevo, with one way tickets starting from £15.

Flights take roughly two hours and 40 minutes, and accommodation is affordable, with an average cost of £56 per night according to Eurochange.
