New Foreign Office travel alert for Brits in Spain as Easter holidays are called off

The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning for British tourists planning trips to Spain after severe rain and flooding led to a state of emergency.

People heading to Lanzarote for a holiday have been warned after the island was hit by heavy rain and flooding. Homes and cars have been damaged, and some holidays have already been cancelled.

Local leaders declared a state of emergency on Saturday after the floods caused major problems. Once-busy streets are now empty, with cars pushed aside by the rain. On top of that, a strong sewage smell has spread after the flooding damaged waste pipes.

One disappointed traveller, speaking from a UK airport, said: "Jet2 just cancelled my holiday because the resorts in Lanzarote are flooded. I’m at the airport now. It seems to be happening to a lot of people."

The UK Foreign Office shared a travel warning on April 13, naming Costa Teguise, San Bartolome, and Arrecife as the worst-hit areas. They also said that power cuts and muddy roads are affecting important services on the island.

Officials are telling anyone already in Lanzarote, or planning to go soon, to follow local advice and check weather updates regularly.

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice page to say: “Heavy rain and flooding happened earlier today (13 April 2025) in Lanzarote, especially in Costa Teguise, San Bartolome, and Arrecife.”

They added: “Services around the island have been affected. Some hotels don’t have power. Some roads are blocked by mud. If you’re in Lanzarote or heading there soon, listen to local advice and keep an eye on weather reports.”
