Why you can hear the secret heartbeat of the earth in this mountain town

High in the North Sumatran highlands, surrounded on all sides by dramatic, cloud-shrouded peaks, lies a remarkably resilient and energetic market town that feels perpetually on the edge.

The atmosphere is charged with a quiet, underlying tension, a profound sense of isolation that comes from sitting directly between two enormous, active volcanoes.

This untouched location remains a secret base for adventurers and keen walkers who appreciate a challenging holiday.

The spirited destination we have uncovered is Berastagi, a bustling yet remote town nestled between the famous peaks of Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak in the North Sumatra Province of Indonesia.

This high-altitude spot is the primary agricultural centre for the Karo Batak people, whose unique, traditional culture thrives amidst the exceptionally fertile, volcanic soil.

It is a genuine hidden gem that offers unparalleled views and authentic local life.

Berastagi's awe-inspiring secret is that it is the perfect staging post for climbing Mount Sibayak, a volcano whose summit still steams with sulphurous vents and offers completely surreal, lunar-like views.

Unlike its restless neighbour, Sinabung, which has seen devastating, recent eruptions, Sibayak is currently dormant, allowing visitors to hike to its crater.

This close proximity to immense geological power is what gives the whole town its eerie, powerful energy.

For the practical traveller, be aware that while the town centre is busy with market activity, the roads leading to the surrounding mountains are challenging and require proper planning and sturdy boots.

There are local minibuses and limited, informal car park areas for those visiting the hot springs or trailhead.

Given the high elevation and volatile mountain climate, ensure your boot is packed with waterproof gear and plenty of warm layers, even during the summer months.
