When planning a holiday, sometimes staying in Europe is the best choice—especially when there are stunning destinations just a few hours away.
One travel expert describes this island as having "gorgeous countryside" and "picture-perfect sandy beaches," along with affordable restaurants and a lively atmosphere.
Crete is Greece’s largest island, famous for its breathtaking landscapes, golden beaches, ancient ruins, charming villages, bustling cities, and incredible food. It’s no surprise that it has been one of Europe’s top island escapes for years.

The island is divided into four amazing regions, each worth exploring—Chania, Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi. Chania, built on the site of the ancient Minoan city of Kydonia, is a fantastic place for outdoor adventures.
You’ll find stunning beaches close to the Old Town, along with great hiking trails and vineyards perfect for a day trip. A must-see spot is Elafonisi Beach, famous for its pink sand and clear blue waters on Crete’s southwest coast.
These crystal-clear waters make it a popular summer holiday destination, attracting both sunseekers and water sports lovers. Another must-visit coastal spot is Heraklion, the capital of Crete, known for its strong Mediterranean charm.
This port city is home to some of Greece’s best museums and archaeological sites. Plus, since it's near the centre of the island, it’s a great base for exploring the rest of Crete.

Even if you’re not a history fan, visiting The Minoan Palace of Knossos is highly recommended. It’s the second-most visited archaeological site in Greece, after the Acropolis in Athens.
Wine lovers should take a trip to the traditional wine region of Dafnes, just 10 miles south of Heraklion. Between Chania and Heraklion, you’ll find Rethymno, one of Greece’s best-preserved medieval cities, known for its stunning beaches, historic treasures, and stylish resorts.
Rethymno is a wonderfully romantic destination, offering a mix of cultural sites, scenic landscapes, golden coastlines, impressive architecture, and world-class museums for both relaxation and adventure.
For those looking to escape the crowds, Crete’s easternmost region, Lasithi, is the perfect retreat. With its untouched natural beauty, colourful villages, and secluded beaches, it’s an ideal spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the sea.
