The eerie american village that was secretly rebuilt by design

Nestled deep within the colossal, snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains lies a community so fantastical and perfectly rendered it feels like a movie set for an alpine folk tale.

The entire town presents an untouched, mesmerising Bavarian aesthetic that is utterly baffling given its remote location in the American wilderness.

Reaching this spot requires a winding drive over mountain passes, instantly isolating it from the rush of the modern world.

This incredibly authentic destination is Leavenworth, Washington, a secret pocket of North America where the streets are lined with half-timbered buildings, bright murals, and traditional German signs.

Everything from the gas station to the major coffee chain has been meticulously themed to resemble a quaint, historic village from the Bavarian Alps.

For keen walkers, the town serves as an excellent base for tackling the serious trails of the surrounding wilderness.

However, the town’s great, fascinating secret is that the entire European transformation is a recent, deliberate invention born out of necessity.

In the 1960s, after the railway bypassed the area, this former logging and mining outpost was on the brink of becoming a ghost town.

Local leaders conceived "Project Alpine" to completely rebuild the town for tourism, inventing a stunning, second-life heritage that saved the community from utter collapse.

When you plan your holiday here, be aware that the success of the secret plan means the central area can become extremely popular during its renowned festivals, such as Oktoberfest.

Parking can be a significant challenge, so make use of the various designated car park areas outside the main street if you want to save time.

Given the high elevation and proximity to the mountains, ensure your boot is packed with waterproof gear and plenty of warm layers.
