Budget-friendly destinations in France to add to your 2025 bucket list

As 2024 finished, many people are already starting to plan their holidays for 2025, whether that’s flying off to faraway places or enjoying some UK-based getaways.


But one option you might not have thought about is travelling to France by ferry. It’s an affordable and fun way to explore some of the charming towns in Northern France.


To help you plan your adventures, we’ve put together a list of easy-to-reach destinations in France. These are all accessible by car from Calais, where the ferry docks.

Boulogne-sur-Mer, Pas-de-Calais

Just 30 minutes from Calais is Boulogne-sur-Mer, a lively seaside town known for its rugged cliffs and impressive castle.


There’s lots to do here, from tasting fresh local seafood to visiting one of the UNESCO-listed ‘Belfries,’ a series of tall, historic towers found in both France and Belgium. This town is a fantastic first stop on your Northern France journey.


Arras, Pas-de-Calais

Next up is Arras, recommended by Irish Ferries for history lovers. It’s just over an hour’s drive from Calais, making it an easy destination after you step off the ferry.


Arras is steeped in 1,000 years of history and is home to a magnificent Flemish-Baroque Grand Palace. You can also explore the Carrière Wellington, an underground quarry that British troops used during the First World War.

Amiens, Somme

About an hour and 45 minutes from Calais is Amiens, famous for its beautiful floating gardens and waterways, known as Les Hortillonnages d'Amiens. A 45-minute boat ride through these ancient gardens is a must.


You can also climb to the top of the Amiens Notre-Dame Cathedral for amazing views of the city or visit the Maison de Jules Verne, where you’ll get a glimpse into the life of the famous author.


Rouen, Normandy

Known as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires,’ Rouen is a fantastic destination for history fans. Its magnificent Gothic cathedral, famously painted by Claude Monet, dominates the skyline.


Rouen is also where Joan of Arc was tried and executed. Today, the city is home to a museum dedicated to her life and legacy.
