Travellers in the know are heading to a hidden gem off the coast of Japan to enjoy stunning beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters.
Known as the 'Hawaii of Japan', this hidden gem is made up of over 160 islands and is home to about 1.4 million people.
Visitors can go whale watching, snorkel in the clear waters, watch dragon boat races, and explore the ancient ruins and restored castles of the Ryukyu kings.

Naha, the capital city, is located on the main island and serves as the cultural and business centre.
Despite its incredible natural beauty and rich history, many travellers don’t know about Okinawa, as it's so small it can hardly be spotted on a map.
One woman described it as ‘the Japan you’ve never seen’ and left thousands amazed after sharing photos of the island.
During the day, the bright blue waters, colourful buildings, and palm trees create a welcoming atmosphere. At night, the streets come alive with glowing lights and bustling restaurants.

The best time to visit Okinawa is during the 'shoulder seasons' in April, May, October, or November, when the weather is ideal for swimming.
Some visitors say Okinawa reminds them of places like Bora Bora or the Maldives.
It’s also been called a ‘sub-tropical jungle’ paradise.
Other must-visit spots include Ishigaki Island for a tropical escape, Miyako Island for golfing, cycling, and skydiving around coral reefs, and the Kerama Islands for their untouched, peaceful scenery.
